Oh my god has anyone ever seen such an amazing golf course – these were my exact thoughts as I played my way around The Cut Golf Course.
I’m a golf tragic at the best of times but for only a handful of times in my golfing life have I lost my breath in awe when playing a golf course. This was one of them.
Almost every hole was as a signature hole, with fourteen of them providing stunning views of the Indian Ocean and they each seem to have an element of some of the other great holes from other courses throughout Australia and blend them into their own unique design.
The Cut golf course is located just an hour’s drive south of Perth by the popular seaside town of Mandurah. The Jim Wilcher designed course is set adjacent to the Port Bouvard coastline and the fairways weave themselves through the sand dunes.
This place is a golfing masterpiece – the first thing I noticed was the kaleidoscope of colours that wash themselves into the natural canvas – the way the native bush shadows spill onto the immaculately manicured fairways, the deep blue sky and the turquoise colours of the ocean melt into the pure white sand.
Luckily for me the day was perfect, not a cloud in the sky and only a light easterly breeze – I hear on some days the wind gets up to 30+ knots making this one very challenging golf course.
The par 4’s are long and course management is a must to ensure a great round. In my corner I had Nick Price (the course superintendent), Dave Smith (the Club Captain) and Ian Shortland Jones to guide me around. The lads taught me how to use the hills and the undulations to my benefit and sometimes would add another 50 or so metres to a drive. It sure makes a difference when you are playing with 3 passionate locals.
My favourite holes were the 419 metre 10th hole – a long par 4, with a blind tee shot into a very tranquil sand dune valley, engulfed in the only remaining peppermint tree forests in the region and the signature 400 metre 12th hole – a long winding par 4 that wraps it’s way from a blind downhill tee along the coast line and back up the hill onto what must be one of the most visually spectacular ocean view greens in the World.
To say The Cut is now one of my favourite golf courses is an understatement – it would surely have to rate in the top 5 golf courses in Australia if not the world – am I over reacting – am I still blurred by emotion? Ask me in a week when my heart rate comes down. But in all seriousness the Cut has provided one of those special moments in life where you have the perfect day – today was one of those days.
